Every current member of the Board of Directors will tell you that our biggest organizational concern is succession. We’re all getting older. Many of the Directors will not seek another term when their current term expires. We must find those willing to lead railway preservation deep into the 21st Century.
When I look at those who attended this year’s Fall Conference in Minneapolis, I can only smile. While we expected a bigger crowd, it was the make-up of the attendees that made me smile. Not only was this the crowd full of young preservationists, but also it was full of both male and female young preservationists. My conversations with them have continued post conference, and I can feel the enthusiasm in their voices and their words. Our job as the current leaders is to harness that enthusiasm and produce the next generation of HeritageRail Alliance leaders. Names like Travis Stevenson, Steven Butler, Meg Warder, Rikki Puz, Bethan Maher, Stathi Pappis, Andrew Durden, Tyler Trahan, Trey Davis and many others will soon fill the pages of our newsletter.
For starters, I am filling out the HeritageRail Alliance Committee rosters for 2018. I’ll reaching out to many of these up and coming stars to serve on these committees. We’ll also be inviting them to our Strategic Planning and Board Meetings so they can be involved in our future path.
Before Minneapolis, I wasn’t so sure about our future. After Minneapolis, I am excited about our future!
